Sailing a Tall Ship to Antarctica

Robbie MacDonald
Johannesburg Monthly Meeting
Tuesday, September 6, 2016 - 19:00
Come join us to hear Robbie Mac Donald speak about his realization of a life-long dream to sail across the ocean in a tall ship, as an actively involved participant. He sailed to Antarctica in January this year on the Europa, a 350-ton ship with 30 sails originally built in Hamburg more than a century ago. His responsibilities on board included keeping watch - day and night - for other ships, icebergs, and debris, as well as tying knots and hauling heavy ropes in a team to raise the sails. Some of this work took place in a storm with winds of around 75-80 kms on the return journey.   Robbie has vivid photographs and videos which bring this epic journey to life.   Date: 6 September 2016 Time: 7pm for 7:15 pm Venue: The Cricket Pavilion at the Johannesburg Country Club, 1 Napier Road, Auckland Park Cost: Free for ESSA members, guests R40   Join us for dinner/drinks afterwards at the JCC
