Join us for our second ESSA Club meeting for this year- birder and cyclist Eelco Meyjes cycled more than 3,000 kms on his own from Cape Town to Victoria Falls in Zimbabwe last month to help save Africa's smallest Finch, the Orange-breasted Waxbill (Amanda subflava). Unexpected declines in the wetland and grasslands habitat of the bird have prompted the urgent need for the species to be researched, and he has many tales to tell us about his journey.
Eelco is a founder member and director of the Rare Finch Conservation Group, www.rarefinch.org which launched its first project in 2005 on the elusive and threatened Shelley's Crimsonwing Finch (Cryptospiza shelleyi), one of Africa's rarest finches. The bird can be found in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC- to date there are still only three known photographs of the species in the world.
Please note that this evening talk will be preceded by our AGM.
