Singing in the rain! It was drizzling this morning when we left camp but it dried up quickly. The landscape has changed from tropical farmland to bushveld and it is very obvious that we are nearing the Kenyan border. The people look different too, their clothing is more colourful and they are much friendlier.

We are in Kenya! We put the last couple of Ethiopian hills behind us and arrived at the border town, Moyale, by lunchtime. The only pub in town is called “prison canteen” but we couldn't find out why!

We hit the infamous dirt roads of northern Kenya today. Red sand roads, bush on both sides, and lots of corrugation. It took a bit of getting used to after a couple of weeks on pavement but after an hour or so the sand sliding was no problem anymore. And we are camping at a great location. I lay in my tent sipping tea and watch another glorious African sunset. Before that I was visited by a donkey, a cow, and a herd of goats. They all walked through the camp, peered into my tent, and continued their on their way minding their own business.

"This must be the shittiest place in the whole world" one of my fellow travellers commented while he was setting up his tent next to mine. Indeed, the dirt road has changed to loose rubble and the side of the road consists of red powder and zillions of lava rocks. I hope I didn't overlook one when clearing the area under my tent. When the powder gets in contact with water it forms a slimy mud. Rain is expected for tonight. If it comes we will all look like clay men tomorrow.
