Palaeontology in Clarens and Paddling on the Ash River For those who have not been to Clarens yet are in for a treat. This beautiful small town is in the foothills of the Maluti Mountains in the Free State. We will be camping at the Golden Gate National Park, Glen Reenen Restcamp.   The Clarens Dinosaur Tour starts off with a talk on the geology and palaeontology of the area followed by a field trip looking for dinosaur bones from the Triassic period with Gideon Groenewald, Phd Geology; and David Groenewald, Hons Palaeontology.   The Ash River trip has great white water rafting with grade 3 and 4 rapids. We will be using our 7-man rafts. Please note the following requirements for this river trip: 1. Reasonable experience in rafting; 2. If you have no rafting experience, you must be able to swim. For those who want to kayak, obviously not for novices.   Friday 18 March - arrive at your leisure, braai Saturday 19 March - Palaeo Field Trip, all day, more details to follow. - Dinner in town, Clementines Sunday 20 March - Ash River trip. - Dinner in town or braai. Monday 21 March - do your own thing, walk, or hike at Golden Gate, or browse shops and wait for noon to drink beer at Clarens Brewery - Go home at your own leisure.     Accomodation: Middlevlei Campsite about 10km out of Clarens. Campsite with electricity. Cost: R850 per person,  This includes camping 3 nights, dino trip and rafting. We need 15 people to make this price possible.
